Surgical post-operative instructions
  1. Bleeding - The gauze pad that was placed after surgery acts as a protective dressing and should be left in place for 2-3 hours with gentle pressure applied checking and changing the gauze whenever saturated. Please remove the gauze if you fall asleep. Some oozing is to be expected. If excessive bleeding persists please contact our office.
  2. Pain – The Doctor will provide you with prescriptions as necessary. These can be filled at any drug store and should be taken as directed. Pain may be expected soon after surgery and will reach it’s maximum during the first few hours. It is recommended that the prescription be started within 1-2 hours following surgery and continued as directed. It is helpful to take the medication with some 7-up or a suitable substitute to decrease the possibility of nausea.
  3. Swelling – Swelling and stiffness are to be expected. This swelling may increase over the first 2 days and should then begin to subside. Swelling can be somewhat controlled by the use of ice and heat as follows:
    1. Apply ice to the affected area for 20 minute on and 20 minute off intervals for the first 24 hours.
    2. Swelling and stiffness may be relieved by warm, moist heat applied to the jaws on the 2nd and 3rd days following the surgery. Chewing gum at intervals and gentle stretching exercises beginning the day after surgery can also be helpful.
  4. Nourishment - Nourishment should not be neglected. On the day of surgery a light diet is recommended (Instant Breakfast, Jello, soups, milk shakes, broth etc.). The following day a soft diet that is high in protein and vitamin C should be followed. Suggested foods include eggs, cottage cheese, yogurt, smoothies, and juices. DO NOT USE A STRAW for several days because this could disturb the blood clot.
  5. Activities – Activities should be minimal for the first 24 hours. Rest quietly with your head elevated. Smoking should be discontinued for at least 3 days. Do not expect to return or work or normal activities immediately. Two or three days is recommended and subsequently resuming activities as they are tolerated. Vigorous physical activities and sports should not be resumed until the surgical areas are comfortable, swelling is resolved and a normal diet is possible.
